Short Film 'The Great Switcheroo'
Create a short film or trailer lasting roughly 2 minutes. The average shot length must be under 3 seconds and you should use several different shot types. I based my short from the short story written by Roald Dahl based on the same name.
The film required quite a bit of planning. The source material was considerably shortened and adapted for film. Storyboards and shotlists were created to help visualise the production and were used as references.
I assembled a cast of friends and work colleagues as the original script called for 2 female actors and 2 male actors. After initially filming, the female actors pulled out and I reshot the project using an all male cast. Due to the time of year, there was low ambient light when shooting. A lot of the shots appear quite dark which was difficult to avoid.
I’d created short films prior to this, but this was my first time to exclusively use a DSLR. The camera gave many features which would not have been possible using quicker point and shoot cameras. This project allowed me to experiment with depth of field, quick zooms and have greater control over the light.
